Third Infantry Division Shoulder Patch

Upon arrival I was assigned to bachelor officer’s quarters while awaiting my family joining me. Once they arrived, we moved into government quarters on the edge of the base, a half mile walk to work

I was assigned to the 3rd MI Company but worked in the Special Intelligence element of the division G2. located in a vault in the basement of the headquarters building. 

Because we were basement dwellers, we adopted the name “Marching Mushrooms” for when we participated Volksmarches. Our families and us participated in numerous Volksmarches, which were generally walks of 10 or 20 kilometers. Upon completion of a volksmarch each participant would receive a gold or silver medal.

Our mission was to monitor and keep track of the Group of Forces Germany (GSFG) and East German forces opposite our division front that could attack NATO.

Field exercises were a new experience for me. We worked in truck mounted rooms hooked together with 

The highlight of my assignment was the publication of a book on the order of battle of the forces mentioned above.
